STISA-2024, adopted by African Heads of State in 2014, is the AU’s strategic framework for leveraging science, technology, and innovation (STI) as key drivers of sustainable development across the continent. The strategy aligns with Agenda 2063 and emphasizes transforming Africa into a knowledge-based, innovation-led economy. It outlines six priority areas including food security, health, communication, environmental protection, societal cohesion, and wealth creation.
STISA-2024 also defines four implementation pillars: upgrading infrastructure, enhancing technical competencies, fostering entrepreneurship, and creating an enabling STI environment. Implementation is designed to operate at national, regional, and continental levels, with clear roles for member states, RECs, and AU institutions. Monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, harmonized funding strategies, and international cooperation are integral to the success of the strategy. STISA-2024 represents a commitment to mobilizing Africa’s intellectual and demographic potential, especially among women and youth, to drive innovation and address key development challenges.
