This type of multitasking is what the next wave of AI assistants is being trained to handle. These tools are moving beyond simple voice commands. They are being designed to manage a wide range of tasks, coordinating schedules, replying to messages, adjusting smart devices, and even curating content all through easy, human-like conversations.

It sounds great. But for an assistant to do all that, it would need deep access to your personal data, apps, and device settings. That raises a serious question: can we trust these tools and the companies behind them with such extensive access to our lives?

What the Tech Companies Are Building.

Big tech firms are already in the race. Amazon is upgrading Alexa into something called Alexa+, designed to do more than just play music or check the weather. Google is working on Gemini, part of its Project Astra, which can watch videos, share your screen, and take action without waiting for a command. Microsoft has rolled out Copilot across Windows and Office, turning it into a tool that remembers your habits and helps you manage your tasks. Apple is updating Siri with Apple Intelligence, which promises smart features while claiming to protect your privacy.

All these tools aim to blend into your daily life. To do that, they need access to your calendar, contacts, emails, messages, and location. For example, if you want your assistant to book a dinner and send invites, it would need to know your schedule, find a restaurant, message your friends, and maybe even look up your past preferences.

Right now, most voice assistants only handle simple, app-specific tasks. But the new generation wants to go deeper. The idea is to connect with all tools and services needed to “get the job done.”

That’s a big shift. Traditionally, apps ask for permission in very specific cases. A map app wants your location, a messaging app asks for your contacts. AI assistants, on the other hand, need to operate constantly across many apps and sensors. Microsoft’s Copilot, for instance, can pull data from your notes and browser, then use it to complete a task. Gemini links to Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, and other services to do more than just answer questions, and now with the launch of ChatGpt Agent, it can also do the same and much more tasks than Gemini.

To make all this seamless, developers are trying to reduce anything that slows the process down, like repeated permission prompts. In the future, we might only give these tools broad access once, and they will just keep working in the background. That’s especially likely if the assistant is built into your phone’s or computer’s operating system, like Windows or Android.

But as AI assistants ask for more access, they also require more trust, and that’s where things get complicated.

Why Privacy Matters More Than Ever

These assistants are designed to learn about you, what you like, what you need, and how you work. They use this information to personalise your experience. But with that comes a new set of privacy concerns:

  1. They might build a complete version of “you.” Each app you use knows something about you. Your playlist app might know your mood. Your calendar knows your schedule. Your messages reveal your conversations. When an AI assistant has access to all of this, it creates a full picture of your life. But who owns that data? And what happens if something goes wrong?
  2. One breach could expose everything. If a single app leaks your data, it’s bad. But if an AI assistant that has access to everything gets compromised, the damage could be far worse. There are already examples of companies mishandling personal data. That’s why it’s so important to set limits. Even if you turn off the assistant later, it may have already learned and stored sensitive information, and it’s unclear if it ever truly forgets.
  3. Much of this happens in the cloud. Newer devices can handle some AI tasks directly on the device, but more complex tasks still rely on cloud servers. That means your information has to leave your device to be processed. Once it’s in the cloud, it could be intercepted, hacked, or accessed by someone you didn’t authorise.

New Security Concerns to Think About

Besides privacy, there are major security concerns with giving these tools so much control:

1. They act like mini operating systems. These assistants control apps, sensors, and settings just like your operating system does, and while operating systems have spent years improving security, AI assistants are still new. If someone finds a way to hack the assistant, they could access everything the assistant can. That’s a big risk.

2. They can be tricked. AI models can be manipulated through special input, whether it’s an image, phrase, or voice command. A smart hacker could use a strange file or link to fool the assistant into doing something it shouldn’t, like sharing your data or deleting files. Because these tools are connected to so many services, there are many points where things can go wrong.

3. They might turn into surveillance tools. Ironically, the same access that makes assistants helpful could also make them dangerous. Since they see what apps are doing on your device, they could potentially detect viruses or alert you to strange behaviour. But that means they’re also always watching. Some companies might use this “for security,” but users have little visibility into what’s being collected or where it’s going. In the worst cases, a compromised assistant could act like spyware.

How to Build AI Assistants People Can Trust

If AI assistants are going to be part of our homes and workspaces, they need strong protections. Here’s what that looks like:

1. Privacy must come first. Users should be able to choose what the assistant can access, whether that’s messages, photos, or files and change their mind later. The assistant should only collect what it needs, and users should be able to view or delete what it knows.

2. Security should be baked in. AI assistants should be tested like any core system. They need guardrails like stopping suspicious commands, verifying the person giving the instruction, and logging activity. The assistant should not be overly trusting or always say “yes.” And developers need to keep updating security as threats evolve.

3. Users need transparency and control. People shouldn’t feel like the assistant is a mysterious tool that quietly runs in the background. It should explain what it’s doing, wait for permission before taking risky actions, and allow users to pause or turn it off easily. If it stores something about you that’s wrong or private, you should be able to fix or erase it.

There should also be clear boundaries. For example, an assistant shouldn’t activate your microphone or camera unless you specifically ask. And it shouldn’t handle sensitive apps, like banking or password managers, unless you give it secure access.

Finally, we can’t ignore the business side. Many of these assistants are being built by companies that make money from data and advertising. That creates a conflict between making the assistant useful and protecting your privacy. That’s why regulation matters. We may need clear rules, external audits, and shared standards to ensure companies don’t misuse the power these assistants have.

Moving Forward

AI assistants are getting smarter and more helpful. They are starting to change how we interact with our devices. But that progress brings new risks. We are handing over more control, more data, and more trust.

It’s up to the companies building these tools to earn that trust. That means protecting users, being transparent, and putting privacy and security first. Until that happens, it’s okay to be cautious. The convenience is tempting, but our personal information is too important to risk. These assistants can be useful but only if they serve us, not the other way around.
